unexplained problems?

this post is specially for fi fi. who came to mind when i was reading in preparation for my exams.. =)

do you have a short attention span?
do you have sleepless nights? or resort to sleeping pills to regulate you sleeping pattern?
do you frequently have ulcers?
do you react strongly to life events, whether positive or negative ones?

if you answered yes to majority of the above questions, chances are, you may suffer from low self-esteem!

self-esteem refers to our positive and negative evaluations of ourselves. some individuals have a higher self-esteem than others do, and this attribute can have a profound influence on the way they think and feel about themselves. it is important, however, to note that although some people have a higher self-esteem than others, a feeling of self-worth is not a trait etched permanently in stone but, rather, a state of mind that varies in response to success, failure, changes in fortune, social interactions and other experiences.

so.. research suggests that people who have an unstable, flactuating self-esteem react more strongly to positive or negative life events than do people whose self-worth is stable and secure. self-esteem is linked in important ways to how people approach their daily lives. those who feel good about themselves tend to be happy, healthy, successful and productive. they tend to persist longer at difficult tasks, sleep better at night, and have fewer ulcers. they are also more accepting of others and less likely to conform to peer pressure. in contrast, those with low self-esteem are anxious, depressed, pessimisstic about the future, and prone to failure..

am i right? ;)

facial expression and emotion.

does emotions affect facial expressions? or does facial expressions affect emotions? or both?

a study where participants were told to contort their facial muscles in ways that created a smile or frown and shown a series of cartoons, they rated what they saw as funnier, and reported feeling happier, when they were smiling than when they were frowning. why?

trivia. did you know the the 80 muscles in our face can create over 7000 expressions? wow. tell that to those girls who love to video themselves expressing different emotions. lolx.

it is observed that facial movements spark emotion by producing physiological changes in the brain. smiling causes facial muscles to increase the flow of air-cooled blood to the brain, which produces a pleasant state by lowering the brain temperature. conversely, frowning decreases blood flow, producing an unpleasant state by raising temperation.

so does this change your perception of the questions in the opening line? i say both. =)
it is possible to alter how you feel by putting on the right face. similarly, how you feel also affects what face you put on.

p.s: video themselve. i know thats not exactly correct english. but do i look like care? hahahaha..

whos that in the mirror?

when you look in the mirror, do you see yourself? or do you not realise that image is you, your own reflection?

apparently, other than humans, only great apes - chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans - seem capable of self-recognition. all other animals cant. a series of studies were done by gorgan gallup in 1977. different species of animals were placed in a room with a large mirror. at first, they greeted their images by vocalising, gesturing, and making other social responses. after a few days, the gret apes - but not oher animals - began to use the mirror to pick food out of their teeth, groom themselves, blow bubbles, and make faces for their own entertainment. they recognised themselves!

in other studies, the animals were anesthetised, and an odourless red dye painted on their brows, and returned to the mirror. on seeing the red spot, only the apes reached for their brows - proof that they perceived the image as their own.

using thus same test, it is found out that most human infants begin to recognise themselves in the mirror between 18 and 24 months of age.

cool huh?

50 first dates.

ever watch this show played by drew barrymore and adam sandler? the lead actress had a short term memory loss condition where she forgot stuff that happened just the previous day?

well. that fictitious problem was created for the movie and called goldfield syndrome. in fact, true anterograde amnesia affects either short-term memory, which can last minutes or seconds, or intermediate-term memory, which can last days or weeks. Falling asleep has nothing to do with the condition, and sleep actually intensifies many chemical effects which help memory.

i just found out today that there is, in reality, really such a condition! its called korsakoff's syndrome but the difference is this syndrome is not as selective as portrayed in the movie. the person is unable to recall anything for more than a few seconds, including who he was! scary...

note to self: read more on this condition and others in the man who mistook his wife for a hat by oliver sacks.

cocktail party effect.

do you have a selective attention?

have you ever been at a noisy party and yet managed to hear someone at the other end of the room mention your name?

what you experienced is known as the "cocktail party effect" - the ability to pick a personally relecant stimulus out of a complex environment.

to cognitive psychologists, this phenomenon shows that people are selective in their attention. to the social psychologist, it also shows that the self is an important object of our own attention.

narcissist.

bestfriends birthday.

today is my bestfriends birthday. so old liao still keep getting comments of "can i see your ic" when we go clubbing or watching M18 shows.. wtf.. so babyface.. haahhahaah..

2 days ago we celebrated his birthday. booked a room at siloso beach hotel. intended to party at café del mar until late.. met up with everyone at abt 3pm and headed to the beach. stupid flashbang of a bestfriend was being such a wuss. didnt even want to enter the sea for a swim. ya lah. the sea isnt exactly clean or nice to swim in. but with the small number of people we had, how to play beach volleyball or frisbee? much less football with them girls who dont play.. plus noone remembered to bring a ball or frisbee. haha.. (excluding those two between every guys legs lah. hur hur. so lame. -.-)

after soaking in the salty sea, we went over to the hotel swimming pool, where finally, little flashbang decided to get into the pool. finally! wouldnt even call that swimming though. was more like playing water. like the kids we all used to be. ha.. with limited towels and bathrooms, we went up to shower in staggered succession.

intending to go for dinner, his school friends sprung a surprise on us. they werent joining us liao cause they wanted to reach zouk in time for some event. ho say lah!!! thanks to not so wonderful planning, we had gotten a 2.7kg chocolate cake, intended for some 20 people at least.. already good enough that there were only 13 of us max, now things were even better! the remaining 6 of us could share the gigantic cake, and eat until we puke! wahahhaa...

after dinner, we went to café del mar with the cake, found a place and sat down. out came the candles, the birthday song sounded and the flames were blown out. in the midst of cutting the cake and giving out, we were joking of inviting the whole café del mar to share! hahaha.. luckily at this juncture, 2 of my friends came down. the more the merrier! lolx.

then it started to rain. could things get any worse? we went back up to the room and realised things could! half time and man utd were a goal down to blackburn. (hahaha.. quite a bit of a digression but we were largely man utd fans what... at least me and bestfriend were. lolx.) though it all took a turn for the better when man utd came back to win 4-1, the rained stopped, and we headed down to café del mar again..

armed with a pack of cards, after those that previously didnt know texas hold 'em poker had learnt, we proceeded to play for fun, with drinking as the penalty. first up, flaming lamboghini for the birthday boy, with the bikini babe rubbing in that he looked 16 and thus underaged to be drinking but she would not tell anyone. hah. babyface. next, we ordered a jug of long island ice tea, followed by half a dozen lemon drops, and half a dozen b52s. we rounded off the night with half a dozen tequila pops.

doesnt sound like much right? but i reckon it was the speed at which we drank, with everything being shots, skulling them was the only way to go. end up at about 3am, we were all not thinking straight, spouting rubbish, but otherwise perfectly coherent. =) except the birthday boy. he claimed to have perfectly no reaction to the alcohol, nor was he feeling anything. wtf. spoilt liver lah. hur hur.

i fell asleep at abt 3-plus and woke up again at 5-plus, still feeling groggy, head throbbing. in between, i dreamt that i got fucking stoned on alcohol, best friend dared me to smoke, from which i took 2 puffs and knocked out, cigarette still between my fingers. like wtf man! what kind of dream is that? weird things the influenced brain and conjure up. lolx.

i remember drinking a lot of water to quench this insatiable thirst i had.. then ended up so full, and with alcohol flowing through my veins, i felt like puking. i thought i should just puke instead of controlling the spasms, but i just hate the feeling and taste of puke! (dont you?) ended up controlling it all.. thought had trouble falling asleep so suggested to a fellow insomniac to head back to café del mar and he replied with a question: "do they sell non-alcoholic drinks?" hahahahah!!

didnt end up going though. fell back asleep until 1030, when my alarm rang for breakfast. everyone went, including the bestfriend who threatened to "fucking kill us" if we woke him up so early. oh well. no one was harmed in the waking up for breakfast. =)
